Vice President Leni Robredo has denied that the Liberal Party plans to unseat President Rodrigo Duterte through impeachment.
In a statement issued Tuesday (Sept. 13) Robredo said said LP doesn’t plan to do anything to remove Duterte from power.
As proof of the party’s support for the President, Robredo noted that several LP members have joined the supermajority bloc in the Senate and House of Representatives.
She added that the party’s leadership has also been consistently demonstrating its support for the administration by offering anti-poverty programs and policies that will complement the government’s priorities on poverty alleviation.
“We’ve been coordinating with the relevant government agencies so that our office can help in the rehabilitation effort that needs to accompany the campaign against illegal drugs,” Robredo said in a statement.
Although no date has been set, the Vice President said she plans to clarify the issue with Duterte “to clear the misinformation and assure him of the party’s commitment to the reforms for our Filipino people.”
Speculation that the LP is engineering an impeachment complaint against Duterte emerged after the President accused “yellow” entities of wanting to unseat him.
In a speech in Malacañang Monday (Sept. 12) Duterte said: “Sumakay itong si Obama (US President Barack Obama). Sumakay itong si [United Nations Secretary General] Ban Ki Moon. Dito sumakay. Alam mo kung kaninong laro ito? Yellow yan.”
“They think that if they can build a case against me, I’ll be impeached,” he added.
